Cough. Some of the blame must surely go to the British media and the rugby blogosphere for writing nonsense about the French Top 14 - and lulling British and Irish teams into a false sense of security.Even this post-match report makes the OTT claim that Clermont are 'nothing if not wild in their inconsistency': they're unbeaten at home in 22 European matches, FFS!
Let's see. The Top 14 is slow, bish and bosh, there are no tries - and no French players.
Yet the stars yesterday were certainly Abendanon - but also Fofana, Bonnaire, Nakataici, Kayser, Vahaamahina and other French forwards; even old Rougerie came on for a cameo. Point is that a lot of Top 14 matches this season have been try-fests, with a lot of open rugby played by French players.
The other point being, as I've been saying all along - France DOES have the players who shine at club level against top international opponents, but they obviously don't want to play for Saint-André, who has no game plan and is incapable of getting the best out of them. Compare Fofana or the injured Camille Lopez at Marcel Michelin with their poor performances with the national team.
