Clermont Auvergne is considering an audacious move for rugby league superstar Roger Tuivasa-Sheck to add even more sparkle to their already bumper of a backline.
The NZ Warriors’ captain came close to switching codes back in February when Steve Hansen and New Zealand Rugby led a bid for RTS to join the All Blacks’ setup in the run-up to next year’s Rugby World Cup.
Ultimately, the full back signed a new four-year deal with his NRL club, which will see him through until 2022, but that is unlikely to bother Clermont and their riches.
Semi Radrada, who made a similar switch back in 2017 when swapping the Paramatta Eels for Toulon before joining Bordeaux this season, is reportedly earning a salary in excess of €600,000, which may go some way to turning Tuivasa-Sheck’s head.
Tuivasa-Sheck admitted himself that he deeply considered the NZR offer, which was put on the table to him after crunching the numbers, though without the lure of a possible All Blacks jersey, were he to move to France, it might seem unlikely he would renege and instead make the jump to the Top 14 after turning down Hansen and co.
Born in Apia, Samoa Tuivasa-Scheck has scored 13 tries in 16 appearances in the New Zealand Rugby League and this year won the Dally M Medal, awarded to the NRL’s best player of the season.
There is no doubt he could flourish in the 15-man code and it appears he’d be a good fit for a Clermont back division already stacked full of Pacific Islanders.
The likes of George Moala, Apisai Naqalevu, Tim Nanai-Williams, Alivereti Raka, Setariki Tuicuvu, and Isaia Toeava could be considered teammates were the unthinkable to happen.
Despite the fact Roger Tuivasa-Sheck has already turned down rugby union and an All Blacks jersey this year, Clermont is unlikely to be deterred should a bid for the next potential cross-code star come to fruition.
