Cup glory for Quins at the death

NEC Harlequins are the 2003/04 Parker Pen Challenge Cup Champions. In a grandstand finish to the final, Simon Keogh?s try, converted by Andy Dunne, in the last play of the game gave Quins a victory by 27-26 over Montferrand at the Madejski Stadium. It?s a result that means Quins have qualified for next seasons Heineken Cup.

Three penalties from Paul Burke and a try from Gavin Duffy saw Quins trail 16-14 at half-time. Montferrand points came from a try from hooker Olivier Azam, a drop goal by fly half Gerald Merceron and eight points from the boot of full back Anthony Floch.

A penalty apiece from Burke and Dunne kept Quins in touch, but a second Montferrand try from scrum half Pierre Mignoni, converted by Floch who also kicked a penalty, put the French side on course for victory, as they led 26-20 going into the closing stages. However, centre Raphael Chanal was shown a red card for punching that not only reduced Montferrand to 14 men but crucially handed possession back to Quins.

Ugo Monye made the crucial break down the right flank before offloading to Keogh, who was able to sprint over and touchdown under the posts for the five points. Dunne made no mistake with the match winning conversion and it was immediately followed by the final whistle.

Final score, 27-26.
