Classy French Barbarians to help WP

Lemoine make trip to SA after all

A star-studded French Barbarians team will provide Western Province with the ideal "warm-up match" before the Currie Cup competition starts later this month.

It was confirmed on Thursday that WP will take on a visiting French Barbarians team at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch next Thursday 16 June (a public holiday in South Africa) in a friendly match.

The game will be Province's second preparation match of the season, before kicking off their Currie Cup campaign against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein on July 24. They take on the Golden Lions in the first of their preparation matches this Saturday at Ellis Park.

A number of French internationals, including the highly-rated No.8 Imanol Harinordoquy, France's New Zealand centre Tony Marsh and Vincent Clerc (a member of the French Sevens team) have been named in the French Barbarians tour squad.

The side will be coached by French legend Fabien Galthie.

Ironically the touring party includes Uruguay's most famous player, front row forward Pablo Lemoine, who was unavailable for his country's one-off Test against the Springboks this coming Saturday, but will travel with the Barbarians to this country a few days later.

"The French Barbarians team is an experienced, well balanced unit boasting a number of internationals," WP's director of Rugby Nick Mallett said. "They have a good, strong scrummaging front row and explosive backs and will provide a stern pre-season test for our young WP team."

Harinordoquy was overlooked by the French selectors for their two-Test tour of South African - which sees France take on the Springboks in Durban on June 18 and in Port Elizabeth a week later.

Veteran fullback Sebastien Viars, as well as fly-half David Skrela and flanker Christian Labit were regular French Test players until recently.

The veteran flyer Philippe Bernat-Salles - a well-known face in South Africa - will be on the bench.

Tony doit surement etre forfait avec ses deux semaines de repos.
